Biography of Vincent GilesPreface
"Vince has an undeniable gift, evident to anyone who has ever spent time in
a room playing music with him ... his versatility as a player is matched
only by his good humour and work ethic. A pleasure to be around and a
phenomenal asset to any group of musicians lucky enough to have him along."
"Vincent Giles is a fine muse, unassuming, generous, and extremely
patient. He has earned every scrap of attention you may possibly
pay him."
"I believe that to really understand and appreciate music, we need to look
beyond the equal tempered pitches and see the detail that provides action
for those pitches."
BiographyVincent Giles is a composer and improviser from Melbourne, Australia. A self-taught student of jazz, he has recently turned his attention to composition, studying under Dr. Thomas Reiner and Peter McIlwain at the School of Music Conservatorium, Monash University. Vincent has played professionally around Melbourne and Victoria since he finished high school in 2003 performing folk music, pop/rock, jazz, blues and the avant-garde. In 2009, his avant-garde trio Fracture released an album on the Clinical Archives netlabel which was well received. A passionate interest in the musics of central and south-east Asia spurred Vincent on a quarter-year backpacking trip through India, Thailand, Laos and Bali to experience the music in its original cultural setting and this experience can be heard in his compositions. Influenced by the ideas and music of Stravinsky, Cage, Takemitsu, Messiaen, Charles Mingus and a range of other jazz composers, particularly of the bebop era, Vincent has co-written pieces for three and four piece jazz ensembles and is also a composer of music for solo instruments including oboe (for Jeffrey Crellin of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra), the full range of flutes, guitar, piano and various small chamber ensembles and is adept at electronic composition, having composed for short films and animations.
